Image replacement for h1 logos - semantic or not? 05.01.2009 @ 12:30pm 708 comments
For years I have used the well known image replacement technique for my logos and placed them within an <h1> tag but I recently started to wonder exactly how semantic (or not) using that technique actually is...
Ideally, the <h1> should only ever appear once within a page to show that it is the most important information on the page. This instantly creates problems when you come to subpages on your site. Things like "About me" and "My portfolio" are really what should appear in h1's because they are describing the whole page content and subsequently, SEO is improved. However, if you have already used a h1 for you logo, you are then forced to lower the importance of these subpage headers by placing them in h2's.
So, I wondered... should a logo really be an h1 and should we use image replacement? For the SEO/semantic reasons above I concluded that it shouldn't be an h1, but what should it be instead?
In my opinion, to actually SEE the graphical representation of a logo is important. It's a visualisation that associates itself with you/your business and therefore ensures people think of you when they see similar shapes/colours or even a blank page with your logo on it. It's not there for aesthetics, it's there to represent you. I believe that because of this the user should always see it, it's an informative image and should be marked up as one.
<a href="/home/" id="logo">
<img src="logo.png" alt="company name" />
</a>
This way, a user will always see your logo with or without CSS and you're marking it up for what it really is. What do you think?

Making the Logo with Alt as the H1 may work in a case when you are not sure of the main heading of the page.....possibly the home page of any portal which has no specific theme or heading.....here the logo with Alt can be made as H1 but for story specific pages, the story title can be H1 and for section/category pages, the section name/category name can be made as H1

I was very encouraged to find this site. I wanted to thank you for this special read. I definitely savored every little bit of it and I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you post.
I admire the valuable information you offer in your articles. I will bookmark your blog and have my children check up here often. I am quite sure they will learn lots of new stuff here than anybody else!
Finally, an issue that I am passionate about. I have looked for information of this caliber for the last several hours. Your site is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for another essential article. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such a complete way of writing? I have a presentation incoming week, and I am on the lookout for such information.
The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and 'skin' the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness.
This is the perfect blog for anyone who wants to know about this topic. You know so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I really would want...HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a subject thats been written about for years. Great stuff, just great!
This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, indeed.
What youre saying is completely true. I know that everybody must say the same thing, but I just think that you put it in a way that everyone can understand. I also love the images you put in here. They fit so well with what youre trying to say. Im sure youll reach so many people with what youve got to say.

Interesting thought, but there are very few circumstances in which someeone will see the content of a website without the CSS and background images, and in those cases (screen readers etc) the textual content would be more useful.
I personally stick with the image replacement for the H1, but only on the index page. For interior pages I replace the H1 with a div using the same styling, and use the H1 for the title of the page.

Hello Jenna! I like where you are going with this line of thought. I stopped using the replacement of the image in page header elements for some years in my efforts to avoid irrelevant brands. One thing I would add is the possibility of identification (ID) your header image or logo (as it is unique to the page) to allow manipulation is via css. This would allow the logo itself to be part of a header graphic with more padding and background image in css. Expanding on this idea of identifying unique items on the page can also lead to much cleaner markup without reaching and span many nested div tags.

I think that your logo can be h1 heading tag, because each page in your website has it's own value and PR the same h1 in all pages will be a duplicate content and important only for one keyword phrase. Not each page as unique with own value.

I usually place the text title in h1 tags with keyword at the beginning of the sentence, if it comes to image, make it a link with keyword in your alt. This will enable visitors to come back to the home page simply by clicking the image as long as the image such as logo is the same in all your pages. Thanks for your post, rises awareness.

I believe a logo should importantly have a prominent position on a page as like you said it is a representation of yourself and used as a visual trigger for when a user sees your logo they instantly think of your company. I do believe the H1 should be kept for your main page title header using it to best describe your page which has benefits for SEO. Also keeping to the rule of using 2 H2's 3 H3's etc to add keyword rich headings to your pages. If a text based logo needed to be in your H1 I would definatly look at using font replacement techniques for this.

I just use the h1 tags for the main title and that is it. It seems to give me good ranking in google. But I can see how some people will want to use it more often. You can use h2 tags and then alter the coding so they look similar to the h1s.

I personally have used the h1 tag to place logos on my sites but as you have said this probably isn't best practice from an seo point of view!
More recently as I have put more focus on SEO I have taken a similar route as you have outlined above. This is particularly important when using php includes to load the headof the page containing the logo any uodates can be made simply but the search engiines can still see the main focus of each page from the seperate h1 tags!

I suggest to put title in a element because client would want to know what is the meaning of that image. Because you have set text-indent for the test of h1 . so, that front end user could get information of main logo while he/she hover on logo.

You raise a very good question. It depends on what you are looking to achieve in my opinion. If SEO is the most important thing, I think an image replacement is a better option. However, if branding and overall look and appeal are more important, then what you have with your logo and H1 tag are just fine.

The H1 tag should have a unique content for each page in the same way the page title does.
Yes, the logo is important for branding but from the SEO standpoint that graphic has less value than plain text related to the content of the current web page.

Other than that images should NEVER appear in H tags. Firstly Headings are one of the more semantically important structures in a web page, and only really intended for textual metadata.

You need to associate keywords with your pictures via the alt tag, so that the search engine spiders know what the pictures are, and can place them appropriately.
This is especially important for getting your images to rank in Google Images.
Use a descriptive alt tag for your logo, and your h1 for the more important stuff.

I'd prefer h1 logo rather than boosting keywords through headline. There's no need to overdo on-page optimization, since there's a lot of place where one can insert target keywords. as long as your keywords are in your title tag, description and body then I do believe that there's nothing to worry about. moderation is always the key to any successful SEO campaign.

I would say no it's not semantically correct.
is a text formatting tag and an image isn't text. Since search engines and screen readers can't read an image, there's no reason to use text formatting on it. Use the Alt Desc attribute instead, that's what it's for.
If you really want there to be a text version of the image then use the negative margin technique that you mentioned, as long as the text says the same thing as the image you'll be fine.
Also, why bother using HTML4 when HTML5 is on it's way and XHTML is already in use.

I think, it most cases you should use standard HTML markup to represent your logo. And for SEO and W3S purposes it your have an ALT tag and link back to your home page. If you are worried about have to recode it on every page, just create an include and insert it everywhere it needs to go with a bit of PHP or what every your server side parser is.
PS Wow, you have a lot of link spam on this site.

My gosh, you should clean up your comments. 95% of them are crap.
When it comes to the question as to where you should put the H1-tag, wouldn`t it be best to put it in the post title? (And a H2 in the logo) If you show 1 post only on each page, that is, and you might run into trouble if you have a list with your posts. Wouldn`t it however be better for optimizing each single page if you get around the problem I mentioned; ranking for every page, and then get more visitors? I`m just thinking out loud here, so dont shoot me if I`m way off.

However, if you have already used a h1 for you logo, you are then forced to lower the importance of these subpage headers by placing them

I think it depends on the actual name of your business. For example, if you have a very common name like "CSS Tutorial Site" then using H1 for the logo would make sense since you are adding to the ranking of those common keywords like "Css, tutorial and site".
Otherwise, if you have a unique name like myself: Rodesco Design. It is not important for me to rank for the word "Rodesco" because its not used very much at all. I would be wasting the power of my H1 tag on that word.
Overall Im for your solution. Only use H1 for the Titles of your pages and not the Logo (unless you have a very common logo or name)
Phew!

on the home page, yes h1 should be used behind your logo as it is the most important part of that page, on secondary pages then no, the content title should be h1
in any case h1 is devalued for seo reasons... the benefit of on-page elements is as follows:
1. <title>
2. html sitemap
3. h2
4. h3
5. h1
6. text
7. /
8. /
9. bold and italic text
10. url
so you can still put lots of seo goodness into your content subtitles and get seo benefits without spamming your h1

Hi Jenna! I like where you are headed with this line of thought. I stopped using image replacement on page header elements a few years ago in my efforts to avoid non-pertinent markup. One thing I would add is the possibility of identifying (id) your header image/logo (as it is unique to the page) in order to allow it's manipulation via css. This could then allow the logo itself to be part of a larger graphical header using padding and background image within the css. Expanding upon this idea of identifying unique page elements can also lead to much cleaner markup without quite so many span and nested div tags.
very nice tip

If the H1 contains your company name and you want to display the logo instead, use an image replacement technique.
Other than that images should NEVER appear in H tags. Firstly Headings are one of the more semantically important structures in a web page, and only really intended for textual metadata. Secondly Images are dark data. There is no foolproof method of machine determining what the image contains, (remember alt attributtes can lie.)
