Image replacement for h1 logos - semantic or not? 05.01.2009 @ 12:30pm 210 comments

For years I have used the well known image replacement technique for my logos and placed them within an <h1> tag but I recently started to wonder exactly how semantic (or not) using that technique actually is...

Ideally, the <h1> should only ever appear once within a page to show that it is the most important information on the page. This instantly creates problems when you come to subpages on your site. Things like "About me" and "My portfolio" are really what should appear in h1's because they are describing the whole page content and subsequently, SEO is improved. However, if you have already used a h1 for you logo, you are then forced to lower the importance of these subpage headers by placing them in h2's.

So, I wondered... should a logo really be an h1 and should we use image replacement? For the SEO/semantic reasons above I concluded that it shouldn't be an h1, but what should it be instead?

In my opinion, to actually SEE the graphical representation of a logo is important. It's a visualisation that associates itself with you/your business and therefore ensures people think of you when they see similar shapes/colours or even a blank page with your logo on it. It's not there for aesthetics, it's there to represent you. I believe that because of this the user should always see it, it's an informative image and should be marked up as one.

<a href="/home/" id="logo">
    <img src="logo.png" alt="company name" />
</a>

This way, a user will always see your logo with or without CSS and you're marking it up for what it really is. What do you think?

What people think...

I think it depends on the actual name of your business. For example, if you have a very common name like "CSS Tutorial Site" then using H1 for the logo would make sense since you are adding to the ranking of those common keywords like "Css, tutorial and site".

Otherwise, if you have a unique name like myself: Rodesco Design. It is not important for me to rank for the word "Rodesco" because its not used very much at all. I would be wasting the power of my H1 tag on that word.

Overall Im for your solution. Only use H1 for the Titles of your pages and not the Logo (unless you have a very common logo or name)

Phew!

Hi.
reading your comment ( which i understood - but had no answer to at all) and then reading all your previous comments was very educational too me.
it is the sort of debate that if refined would be sold as an e book.
however i got more from this because of the open discussion nature of it all.
I am personally very new to understanding H! tags etc, but am fully aware of their necessity.
thank you for a little education today.

h1's should be used sparingly, and smaller headings for sub portions of the page. I didn't know h1's were that important in SEO - thanks for the tips.

If concerned about SEO, text in the H1 tag would be my preference; otherwise, use an image. If an image is an essential, you could always add text to the alt tag

H1's are pretty important. There needs to be a balance between SEO and Usability though. You can really tell when a site is trying to appeal only to search engines and not humans.

on the home page, yes h1 should be used behind your logo as it is the most important part of that page, on secondary pages then no, the content title should be h1

in any case h1 is devalued for seo reasons... the benefit of on-page elements is as follows:

1. <title>
2. html sitemap
3. h2
4. h3
5. h1
6. text
7. /
8. /
9. bold and italic text
10. url

so you can still put lots of seo goodness into your content subtitles and get seo benefits without spamming your h1

There's so much that can be done and the search engines are continually changing, so I think it's important to concentrate quality if you want longer term security. Over optimizing can lead to problems over time if you get found out, although people still get away with it sometimes for a while?

Hi Jenna! I like where you are headed with this line of thought. I stopped using image replacement on page header elements a few years ago in my efforts to avoid non-pertinent markup. One thing I would add is the possibility of identifying (id) your header image/logo (as it is unique to the page) in order to allow it's manipulation via css. This could then allow the logo itself to be part of a larger graphical header using padding and background image within the css. Expanding upon this idea of identifying unique page elements can also lead to much cleaner markup without quite so many span and nested div tags.

Your logo is a branding tool butr should not necessarily be within an h1 tag. What would it mean to have te same h1 tag on each page of your website? That devaluate the purpose of h1 tag you defined so weel in this post.

This is not a good idea when it comes to best practices SEO. If you must use an image as the H1 - make sure the alt tag is optimized.

I struggle with this issue from time to time. I am a relatively new designer when it comes to CSS and I learned everything from a couple CSS/HTML books plus hundreds of hours of analyzing the code in websites that appear on CSS Zen Garden (as you may know there is a lot of H1 image use going on there). Needless to say I have developed this habit which I use for newbie flexibility.

There is no need to make logo as h1. I suggest to use alternative text and picture name related to content. And that is the biggest secret.

But don't overvalue importance of h1 h2 and other on-page optimization things.

I've been thinking about something like this as well, on my blog, I use an h1 as my blog title, h2 as article header, and h3 as sub-headers. I'm wondering if it would be better for semantics to switch over to a div for my blog title and use h1's strictly for articles. Nice post.

I wouldn't ever use an image inside an H1 tag, doing so basically destroys the SEO value of the tag.

An H1 should be keyword rich and act as a heading for the page.

Anthony Green said...

@Multiply Themes
It isn't fine in SEO. That was the point I was making about dark data. Search metrics do not value images in H tags because it would open the sytem to abuse.

Multiply Themes said...

I think as long as alt text st there, it fine in seo.

Anthony Green said...
07.09.2009 @ 08:21am

If the H1 contains your company name and you want to display the logo instead, use an image replacement technique.

Other than that images should NEVER appear in H tags. Firstly Headings are one of the more semantically important structures in a web page, and only really intended for textual metadata. Secondly Images are dark data. There is no foolproof method of machine determining what the image contains, (remember alt attributtes can lie.)

Thanks for sharing. I never thought about the logo being pertinent content and therefore earning a spot in the source. It's just usually ugly in an un-styled page. Maybe this should go a bit further to include ways to make it pretty in both styled and un-styled layouts.
